Color Lifting Technique with Decorative Masks from Stampin' Up!

Hi Stampy friends!  Today I am playing around with Decorative Masks from Stampin' Up!  Instead of adding color using the masks to make a pattern, I am taking away color today! This is a fun technique and you get a subtle or not so subtle pattern depending on how much you take away.

I used the Tasteful Touches Stamp set and Tasteful Labels dies for my samples.

This first card uses a wash in Balmy Blue on a piece of watercolor paper.  I then layered the Mask on top of the watercolor paper, and dabbed at the paper with a damp paper towel.  I tried this two ways. On the left, the watercolor paper was dried first before I applied the mask.  On the right, I applied the mask right away while the watercolor paper and ink were still wet.  The wet paper gives some interesting mottling on the ink that sort of beaded up a bit on the underside of the mask.  Both are pretty and give an interesting background.

Rather than stamp on white as I usually do, I stamped my flower on Crumb Cake with Memento Ink.  I then colored my flower with Stampin' Blends.

The card base is Early Espresso with a layer of Rich Razzleberry on top.  The ribbon trim is Early Espresso Faux Suede trim.  I used the Tasteful Labels dies for my sentiment. I give a fun tip on how to custom size this in my Video.

My second sample started with a wash of Granny Apple Green, Bermuda Bay and Night of Navy on Watercolor paper.  The card on the left was dried first before doing the color lifting technique, the card on the right was done while still damp.

I used Sponge Daubers to apply ink to the feather, and added some Versamark to the tips so that I could add some Gold Embossed detail. The sentiment is on a label cut using the Tasteful Labels dies in Night of Navy.

To make the feathers different sizes, I cut one in half and attached it behind the sentiment to make it appear different from the feather in front. I added another stamped feather to the inside.
